Why beagle howl

It is prevalent for beagles to howl when they are bored and want your attention. You need to prevent this kind of behavior. You have to make it clear that howling is not the right way to grab your attention. So ignore your little pal. DO NOT respond to his howling. Do not even look at your dog. Any type of reaction from your side will encourage this habit.

Once your dog is silent for more than 5 seconds, reward him. You will need them more often while training him. Sooner or later, your dog would figure out the connection between being quiet and getting a treat. Do not treat him immediately after his howling; wait for 5 to 10 seconds.

Slowly and gradually increase the wait time. You must teach your beagle discipline. Train him to follow your commands. It might take more than few tries to train your beagle these commands. But he will learn eventually. If you find out that your beagle howls when you are away, then this is due to separation anxiety.

As I said before, beagles are social animals. They are used to living in packs, and they might not deal with loneliness properly. The best method to help your dog overcome separation anxiety is by associating good things with separation. For instance, give your beagle a toy right before you leave. Give him a Food puzzle toy, the best thing for my beagle when he is alone.

You can stuff some healthy and delicious food in a Food puzzle toy and give it to your beagle before you leave. The toy will keep him occupied for 30 minutes easily. Make sure you take the toy away as soon as you return home. Be consistent and repeat this for a while. Over the top, spend quality time with your beagle when you are back home.

Take him for a walk, play with him, teach him some tricks. It will surely help your beagle overcome separation anxiety. Environmental triggers such as thunder can also cause your beagle to howl. During such a situation, sit next to your dog and calm him down. Try to distract him by playing fetch or some other game. Howling can be learned while a puppy is still in the litter. If a beagle's mother or littermates howl, they will all learn to sing before they leave the whelping box.

Beagles who don't howl as puppies may be inspired by other triggers as they get older. Your beagle might howl for the first time when he sees bird flying on a walk or hears a loud noise that triggers his instinct. The quiet beagle is a rare beagle, but chances are that a quiet puppy may be a quiet adult and howl infrequently.

Beagles have three distinct vocalizations. The beagle bark is different from a howl. Beagles have a loud bark, and your beagle will use it to get your attention: for instance, when he wants his dinner. You'll know the beagle howl when he throws his head back and makes a high-pitched, long mournful sound that can't be mistaken for anything else.

A beagle also bays, which is his third vocalization. That's a cross between a bark and a howl. It's not as long as a howl and has a sharper, harsher sound. A lot of people own dogs because they believe they will alert them to unwanted home intruders. In both cases, the Beagle is howling to alert their owner of something — whether it be a prey or a home intruder. If they are recovering from an injury or surgery or live with a chronic pain condition like canine arthritis , they will obviously not understand the nature of their condition, meaning that their howling is an indication of their panic.

If, for example, your Beagle howls every time somebody rings the doorbell, you can use that stimulus to condition them to howl at certain time, rewarding them with treats so they have positive associations with howling at certain instances.

If, for example, your Beagle howls whenever someone approaches the house, try to keep them away from doors and windows. If your Beagle howls a lot at a certain dog park, try taking them to another, and so on. It might feel a little like trial and error, but if you learn to pick up on what stimuli your Beagle responds to, it makes curbing the howling a lot easier!

If your Beagle is howling to get your attention, the most effective solution is to ignore them. It may be difficult, especially if the howling is disruptive, but any response to the howling — whether it be positive or negative — reinforces the message to your Beagle that howling will lead to the attention they crave.

If you prove their hypothesis to be wrong, they will stop seeing the point of howling and cease from doing it. As I have mentioned, Beagles are an especially energized breed, so if they are howling a lot take a moment to reflect on whether all their energy is being expelled with cardio exercise as well as a daily forty-minute walk. Interacting with your Beagle through playtime, fetch and other toys will make the world of difference, satisfying their hunger for contact and intellectual challenges.

You could also try interactive toys which makes your Beagle work for their treats as a way to help occupy them mentally. As we have seen, Beagles can howl for all kinds of reasons. Each howl could mean a different thing. As energetic, athletic hunting dogs who love to run , they are also incredibly vocal and big howlers.
