Also, some dewormers control both adult and immature parasites, while others only control parasites in the intestinal tract. Only the avermectins ivermectin and moxidectin control bots. To determine if the product used is working, have a fecal flotation exam done before deworming and again about 14 days after deworming. The reason for the time between deworming and the second fecal exam is to allow time for the parasites to be killed and passed out in the feces.
Anthelmintic drugs for horses should not threaten the animal with any harm. In case of severe infection with adult worms and larvae, colic can happen, the horse can feel bad.
Colic may appear within an hour — three after giving the drug, and at this time it is necessary to keep the horse under observation. To understand whether worming procedure has worked for a long-term period, after days it is worth re-examining to make sure that our horse is healthy and the drug has acted as it should. Typically, the principle of action of the drug for worming is to either impede the nutritional process of the parasites or cause paralysis.
After deworming after 48 hours , it is necessary to thoroughly remove the entire litter, disinfect the floor and walls with an antiseptic solution, especially for stalls that contain foals. It is necessary to clean out all the stables and items of care! In the wild, horses do not practically suffer from worms. Worm eggs enter the body of a horse with grass, and new generations of eggs are released along with manure, and when horses have to graze in the immediate vicinity of their own heaps, the likelihood of re-infection increases many times.
A horse may be clothed with the following clinical signs: weight loss; loss of appetite anorexia ; exhaustion; despite good nutrition, the horse does not gain weight; stomach problems; intestinal obstruction, constipation; diarrhea; jaundice; depression; anemia pallor of mucous membranes ; leg swelling; weakening of the immune system, pain; cough; labored breathing; discharge from the nose; tail sweeps; dull ruffled wool; decreased performance; weakness.
So it is an important thing to take care of your horse and to pay attention to its physical and mental health. Be especially careful of this advice if horses are grazing fields with ponds, streams and ditches to prevent the chemicals getting into water courses.
If stabling is impossible then aim to worm when the weather is dry to stop chemicals being washed into the soil and poo pick as thoroughly as you can. If a horse is wormed and then moved immediately only the resistant worm strains will survive and go on to reproduce, greatly speeding up the resistance problem on the land. Instead after worming the horses should go back onto the original pasture, diluting the population of resistant worms with those still susceptible to the drug. This goes against all we were taught in the past and feel wrong, but it will help to slow down worm resistance on your fields.
The advice to keep horses off the fields for hrs after worming is especially important if you're targeting tapeworm. This is because the tapeworm segments that are shed after treatment are full of eggs and these burst in the dung releasing fresh potential for infection which you don't want on the pasture if you can help it. If your horse swallows an infected forage mite, adult tapeworms may be found in your horses intestine within one or two months.
These are actually flies, not worms, and often give owners cause for concern over the summer. They eventually arrive in the stomach where they remain for the next 10 months. Bots can cause damage to the stomach lining. Administration of an ivermectin or moxidectin wormer such as Eqvalan, Equimax or Equset in the winter is also effective. Where there is extensive grazing and limited horse numbers under the control of a single owner, pasture management can be very effective at reducing levels of parasitism.
Unfortunately most of our clients have limited access to grazing, or share livery yards with a changing population of horses and owners. Although the following precautions will help to control parasite burdens on pasture we must emphasise that they are NOT a substitute for an effective worming strategy.
