For example, in the case of the Lifan 5 HP engine , the mark on the crown of the piston points toward the camshaft side of the engine. It is also important to note that as well as a major thrust side, each engine also has a minor thrust side , which is opposite to the major thrust side. See also the glossary explanation for minor thrust side for more information. Major Thrust Side :. Major Thrust Side : As a piston is pushed down the cylinder on its power stroke , the piston will meet resistance as it tries to turn the crankshaft.
Keyword s : thrust side. This is why it is important to install pistons with the arrow pointing to the front of the car. On our cars, however, the thrust face of the piston and cylinder wall are on the side opposite the camshaft. That's why, even though it is counterintuitive, connecting rods on our engines should be installed such that the oil spurt hole in the rod points away from the camshaft. One would think this hole should point toward the camshaft to provide lubrication but, in fact, the camshaft is lubricated only by splash oil from the crankshaft and connecting rods, and drip oil from above.
Of course the cam bearings are pressure-lubricated from the oil pump. Point is, the oil spurt hole points away from the camshaft and toward the opposite side in order to provide supplemental lubrication to the thrust side of the piston and cylinder wall.
